Gjenganer - Scandinavia
The gjenganger is a Scandinavian revenant who rises from the grave. These are people who have usually died suddenly, violently and early, leaving unfinished work behind. (Monsterpedia) While the gjenganger is often referred to as a ghost, this is misleading. The gjenganger takes on a corporeal form, giving it an undead body and placing it well within the revenant category. (Zombiepedia) The gjenganger is extremely violent and there are a number of ways to combat this revenant most of them a variation of using Christian or Catholic symbols to prevent the gjenganger from rising from the grave. However, one tradition, the vard, is probably the most unusual.
A vard is a pile of stones or twigs placed on a spot where a person has died either suddenly or violently. When passing, a person is to place another stone or twig on the spot to prevent bad luck (probably to prevent the gjenganger from coming after them). It is said that if a stone or twig is placed on that spot, the person can expect good luck in their travels. (Zombiepedia)
